Electric Fireplace: Pros and Cons

Electric Fireplace: Pros and Cons

Are you considering purchasing an electric fireplace, but would like to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages first? You’re at the right place! Read on to make an informed decision.

Compared to wood or gas fireplaces, electric fireplaces are a relatively new home appliance, as recently as 1995. They have improved over time and offer a far more realistic experience than the initial models. They are different, however, from their wood and gas counterparts in many ways. To choose the best product for you, you must weigh the pros and cons.

The Advantages of Electric Fireplaces

·      Electric fireplaces are not only decorative, they are equally easy to use. Gone are those good old days of having to chop your own logs or—more recently—having to buy wood at the store!

·      There’s no chance of a gas leak!

·      Electrical fireplaces are, of course, the safest type of fireplace as they are fireless and don’t require a gas connection to work.

·      Turning them on is as simple as switching on a light.

·      You don’t need a municipal permit to have one installed in your home: only an electrical plug and enough space.

·       It can be easily carried from residence to residence or even from room to room. So, you won’t have to leave it behind if you move or get rid of it if you redecorate.

·      Another advantage we must mention is its attractive price! Moreover, there is no additional cost to using it, which is a point in its favour.

·      It is the greenest choice since no air pollution is generated through combustion.

·      Since some cities have banned the use of solid-fuel-fired equipment like wood-burning fireplaces, the electric fireplace is a very attractive second choice.

The Disadvantages of Electric Fireplaces

·      If you love the rustic ambiance created by a wood fire, you may be disappointed by an electric fireplace. You must keep in mind that you won’t see any actual flames.

·      Let’s be honest, an electric fireplace will never generate the same amount of heat as a wood or gas model. The first can produce 5000 BTU of heat per hour, while the other two can deliver up to 30,000 BTU. However, if you install it in a 1000-square-foot room, it should not be a problem (although its effect will not be comparable to that of the heat created by a large wood fire).

·      You may be disappointed by the look of certain models that poorly imitate actual fire. So, take the time to shop around before making a final decision.

To summarize, if you simply want to add a little extra coziness and a supplementary heat source to your home, an electric fireplace will in most cases be an excellent choice. If you are still unsure or have more questions, contact a fireplace specialist who can guide you in selecting the product that best meets your needs.
