Asphalt, Concrete or Paving Stones: Which to Choose for Your Driveway?

Asphalt, Concrete or Paving Stones: Which to Choose for Your Driveway?

Are you having your driveway resurfaced, but aren’t sure which type of paving product you should pick?

The three most used options are asphalt, concrete, or paving stones (interlock). Each one of these materials has its own unique features. Here’s what you must consider when making an informed decision.

Classic Asphalt

Asphalt paving is the most popular and most affordable choice.

However, it won’t last as long as the two other options. Its lifespan is between 10 and 20 years, after which you should expect cracks to appear. You should also be aware that asphalt does require more maintenance than concrete.

To preserve its integrity and keep it looking its best, you can hire a company every two to three years to have a coating of sealant applied. For added curb appeal, use interlock paving stones in combination with asphalt.

The cost: You should expect to pay between $3.50 and $12 per square feet for an asphalt driveway, plus the cost of the excavation work.

Stylish Paving Stones (Interlock)

Driveways finished with paving stones, commonly called interlock, are more expensive to install initially, but will save you money down the road.

If you decide to go for this type of material, you will have peace of mind for many years, as interlock can last up to three decades.

One of interlock’s advantages is that you can remove and replace stones as needed, if they shift or split over time, for example. You can also play with textures to create different effects and have a driveway that stands out from those of neighbouring houses. An interlock driveway will elevate the look of any residence.

Interlock paving is comprised of sand, cement, and aggregate. In the past, ordinary sand was used, but yielded mixed results with grass and sand between the stones. Today, thanks to polymer sand, this is no longer an issue.

The cost: You should expect to pay between $14.50 and $24 per square feet for an interlock driveway, plus the cost of the excavation work.

Practical Concrete

Concrete’s durability is comparable to that of interlock paving stones. It can likewise be customized with different colours, patterns, and finishes. It is thus equally possible to set your home apart with a concrete driveway.

However, its main feature is its seamless surface. No more weeds peaking through the joints! Furthermore, concrete cannot sink or shift like interlock paving is known to do.

But, if the choice is between concrete and interlock, go for the style you like best since the two materials are similar in terms of durability, installation, and price.

The cost: You should expect to pay between $8.50 and $18 per square feet for a concrete driveway, plus the cost of the excavation work.

A bit of advice: make sure you have the paving work on your driveway carried out between the months of June and September. Plus, don’t forget to tell your contractor what kinds of vehicles will be occupying your driveway as this will dictate how thick the material will have to be. For example, if you plan on regularly parking your recreational vehicle and you opt for asphalt it will have to be thicker than for a small car.

You now have all the necessary information to select the driveway paving option that best suits your needs, tastes and budget.
