Everything You Need to Know About Decor Trends for 2020

Things are constantly evolving in the world of home decorating and interior design. Using their intuition and knowledge, the experts can predict some of the fashions that will grace our homes in the coming months. Here are a few examples that are easy to incorporate into your decor.

Choose the Most Up-to-Date Colours

Did you know that cobalt blue has been chosen as the colour of the year for 2020? Its richness and elegance will give any room a warm and soothing atmosphere. Plus, it connects us with natural elements like the sea and the sky. There are also other colour options you can choose from to update your space: cherry red, eggplant purple, yellow ochre as well as rust and pastel tones.

Down on the Floor

To give a room a stronger sense of presence, there is nothing better than placing all furnishings and decorative items no higher than a third of way up the wall, low to the floor. This trend has been very popular in Europe for some time now and is taking Quebec by storm with sofas featuring deep seats and low backs, legless coffee tables and floor lamps no taller than a bedside lamp. To create this look, you can also position objects in the room following a low imaginary line, adding a gallery wall that does not extend higher than halfway up the wall or a wide but short console.

Create Contrasts

We had recently witnessed the arrival of curved lines, ending the reign of straight lines over contemporary design. And yet, this trend is already being reversed. A combination of both is now preferred in order to create a disjointed feel. In fact, imperfection is a key word for 2020. How do you bring it into your home? Cover the couch with mismatched cushions or bring into a room an accessory in a contrasting colour, shape or texture, for example. This disparate look can also be achieved by placing a vase with straight and simple lines on a busy-looking wooden cabinet (many different handles, strong grain, different shades, etc.). The idea is to create contrasts.

Surf Those Waves

Wavy lines are everywhere in trade conventions, a sure sign that they are an unmissable trend. They are on textured wall panels, the edges of mirrors, carpets and upholstery. Waves have also taken over the world of ceramics. It would seem that they have replaced the herringbone patterns that have been so popular since 2016.

Exhibit Objects That Have a Story to Tell

At a time when we are trying to significantly reduce consumption, using old objects is an obvious solution. But be careful: you must resist the urge to revamp them as the point of the trend is to use accessories and belongings as they are. Of course, it takes a well-trained eye to find that diamond in the rough. Imperfect objects or those in an eclectic style can add a unique touch to a decor. And don’t hesitate to mix the old with the new!

Fall in Love With Wood

Although wood has been an indispensable decorative material in recent years, it does not seem to have any intention of giving up its place. It is most used in its natural state, free of stain or paint. Ropes of all kinds and linen fabrics are also welcome because of their close-to-nature feel.

Go for Period-Specific Artworks

Shopping at your local antique store for period-specific items will be more fashionable than ever in 2020. Called New Antics, this trend comes in several forms. It can be a bronze sculpture of knight, Chinese porcelain, a painting of a Greek goddess or columns reminiscent of Italy. This will add mystery and exoticism to your space.

Look Out for Tripods

Out with four-legged tables, couches and bookcases in 2020. Three is now the magic number. This obsession with tripods will also be apparent in decorative objects. For example, vases and plates will be supported with three legs, as will be coat racks and stools.

Know that updating a room doesn’t mean you have to completely redecorate. Often, all you need to do is swap out a few items for something more in style, and voilà! If you’re unsure, look at photos for inspiration. You will find a treasure trove of them online or in magazines!
